My woodcraft explores the interplay between natural wood grain and color, transforming raw wood into imaginative assembled landscapes, abstract wall art and organic sculptures that celebrate the inherent beauty and versatility of the wood. I like to think I am standing in the middle of the bridge between art and craft.

What began as a personal mission to create original designed birdfeeders and birdhouses to support our backyard birds, quickly evolved into an artistic journey. Each piece I create starts with an observation of the wood’s grain. The tightly structured patterns of birch may suggest grass or water, while the flowing grain of sycamore or cedar evokes images of mountains and hilltops. Large pine knots remind me of a radiant sun, surrounded by the expansive rays of its grain. I use water-based dyes, stains, or a blend of both for color, using gravity to help blend and accentuate the features. I affectionately call these pieces “Grainscapes,” where nature’s imagery is captured in the essence of the wood through impressionistic flowing lines of color and grain.

Species such as Rainbow Eucalyptus, Hong Kong Orchid and Spalted Oak beckon me to look deeper and uncover their beauty inside through sculpture. As I begin to carve, chisel, and sand, the wood gradually reveals its lines and curves of grain, guiding me to uncover the abstract, organic shape it wants to become. I revel in the moment when I realize, ‘There is nothing more I can add.’ It feels complete. Yet, that’s when the true work of finishing begins.

My bird-centric designs embrace a mid-century modern aesthetic, while my wall art draws from the natural palettes of water, land, and sky. I make a concerted effort to source materials responsibly, using self-milled wood from locally felled trees, historic window frames, discarded furniture, and discounted lumber, giving them a new life as art saved from the firepits and landfills.

Every Man Glitter Studio piece reflects my continued evolutional journey of craftsmanship and artistry and are titled, signed, dated, and branded.
